Terraza de Nessím

 

It has all been written before. Slated on the tiles behind the kitchen sink where your mother stood watch over the ocean. No carte blanche, every word written, over written, and revised on tablets of terra cotta. Each word, mortar, binding the edifice. Somewhere underneath this surface, your fingerprints fossilized. Palm fronds etched in sandstone —show your hands were here, sculpting every edge, smoothing clay, making the rough like glass, a glaze and fire story.

 

 

Todo ha sido escrito antes. Escrito en los azulejos detrás del fregadero de la cocina donde tu madre vigilaba el océano. Sin carta blanca, cada palabra escrita, sobreescrita y revisada en tablillas de terracota. Cada palabra, argamasa, une al edificio. En algún lugar bajo esta superficie, tus huellas dactilares se fosilizaron. Hojas de palmas grabadas en piedra arenisca: muestra que tus manos estuvieron aquí, esculpiendo cada borde, alisando la arcilla, haciendo que la rugosidad sea como vidrio, un esmalte y una historia de fuego.
